The provinces biggest and most popular soccer league "kicks off"
today with three matches. The opening game of the season will
be played in Burin, where the young Eagles squad will host the
resurrected Feildians of St. John's. Burin has not had a
Challenge Cup team in a few years, and last year the Feildians
surprised many by not entering the league. This game is
scheduled for 3:30. At 6:30 the CBS Super Cup champions, Holy
Cross Crusaders of St. John's, will be visiting the 2004 Challenge
Cup champion Marystown United. It will be interesting to see
if Holy Cross can keep their form and finally will their way back to
the championship game during Labour Day weekend, a task they haven't
met in recent years.
At 6:30 the
third game begins in the metro area where last year's champions, the
St. Lawrence Laurentians, are visiting Mt. Pearl to face the St.
John's U-18 team who have entered the league as an exhibition team.
This game should see Alec Turpin suit up for the blue and white once
again, and on his former home field in Mt. Pearl no less.
Check back after the games for scores and results.
